What a Visit Looks Like in Laguna Beach

An illustrative morning in a hillside home: help getting ready, stretches, painting on the deck, and lunch.

Picture a retired art teacher in his eighties in a canyon home in Laguna Beach, with a deck that looks toward the ocean and a long staircase between the bedroom and the kitchen. He paints most days and wants to keep it that way, but mornings have become slow, and his son worries about the stairs. Here is how a three-hour Monday morning visit from Jolly HCA might go.

9:00 a.m. Getting ready for the day

We arrive as he is waking up. We help him out of bed and to the bathroom, stay close while he washes and shaves, and help with socks, shoes, and the buttons on his favorite paint-spattered shirt. That is personal care assistance, done at his pace and never a clinical procedure.

9:40 a.m. The stairs, together

The staircase is the part of the morning his son worries about most. We go down together, one step at a time, his hand on the rail and ours at his elbow. At the bottom we do ten minutes of seated stretches for his shoulders and knees. That is gentle exercise and mobility support: steadiness and encouragement, not a program.

10:00 a.m. Breakfast and a reminder

Oatmeal with berries and a strong coffee, the way he likes it. His written schedule puts his morning medication with breakfast, so we give a reminder and check it is taken. Reminders only, never administration.

10:30 a.m. Painting on the deck

We carry the easel, the paints, and a jar of water out to the deck and set everything within easy reach. He paints the view; we sit nearby with a cup of tea and talk about the galleries he used to show in, the students he taught, and the light on the water this morning. This is companionship, the part of the visit he says he looks forward to most.

11:10 a.m. Letters and photographs

When the painting reaches a stopping point, he asks for help with something that has been on his mind: a stack of letters from former students that he wants to keep in order. We sort them by year into a box on the dining table while he tells us which ones made him laugh. He decides to photograph the new painting and send it to his son, so we help him take the picture on his phone and send it. It is companionship, and it is also a way of keeping his days full of the things he cares about.

11:30 a.m. A light lunch

While he cleans his brushes, we make a light lunch of soup and a sandwich and plate up something simple for his dinner. We eat together on the deck. That is meal preparation, built around what he enjoys.

11:50 a.m. Tidy and plan

We wash the dishes, clear the paint things from the walkway so nothing is left to trip over, and put a load of towels through the wash. That is light housekeeping. Before we leave at noon, we check the calendar together for the week, part of his daily routine, and send his son a short note: good morning, stairs fine, a new painting started.

Every visit is non-medical

Each part of this visit is one of Jolly HCA's ten non-medical services. Meliza Jones is a Registered Nurse, BSN, and that background shapes how attentive she is, but the visit itself is help with everyday life at home, never a substitute for a doctor. Errands are always run on the client's behalf while the client stays home.

Every household is different, and every visit is built around the person and the home. Visits have a two-hour minimum, payment is due at the time of service, and the current rate is given by phone. See our Laguna Beach page for more about care in the area.
